For more than 25 years Will Gadd has been one of the top adventure sports athletes in the world. Now he’s taking the lessons he learned while succeeding in some of the world’s toughest environments and sharing them with audiences ranging from Nike to Exxon Mobile to incarcerated youth. He won the X Games, set two world records for paragliding, and safely led numerous large TV and research expeditions into highly dangerous—and rewarding—environments. He climbed up a frozen Niagara Falls, flew a paraglider over the Grand Canyon, and taught his kids (and doctors and oil sands workers) to positively manage risk with the direct, entertaining and effective tools he learned through a lifetime of living on the edge. He speaks with personal humor and professional depth on effective and widely applicable tools to do great things while staying safe, building team resiliency, succeeding in low-knowledge environments, and doing what the everyone said was, “Impossible!” He has shared more than 200 high-end presentations to groups from American Express to Hydro One. Most recently he and his teams found new life forms in glacial caves for a Discovery TV show, and helped a planetary scientist sample the world’s oldest rocks in Canada’s Arctic. Dennis was part of the MST Development Corp, the largest developer in the Vancouver Region comprised of three nations,  xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Nation), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish Nation) and Dennis’ own community of səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation), where Dennis also acted as elected councillor.  For many years, Dennis has been specializing in ‘Indigenizing’  design and construction projects on large scale developments. Dennis believes we are experiencing an indigenous renaissance and Indigenizing is an act of decolonization. As Executive Director of Indigenous Business Initiatives and Engagement, Dennis currently is developing business courses at UBC Sauder School of Business where the curriculum is being structured with Indigenous experience, minds and visions at the centre. Indigenizing will enable Indigenous people to once again live their values and rebuild their traditions.

We are pleased to have Dennis Thomas-Whonoak who will share a conversation with Stephani Carter of Stok covering how the IPD process enables Indigenous Communities to delivery projects with their own traditions, means and ways. 

Through conversation, Dennis and Stephani will walk through an Indigenous IPD Guidebook developed for Indigenous Communities, and explain why such a guide book is timely and important. The intent of the guidebook is to outline how IPD can enable Indigenous communities to express their cultural traditions on a construction project and onboard all project team members to understand Indigenous history and values. Dennis utilized his own Nations language to Indigenize IPD terms and processes, he intends to share the guidebook with more Nations so they can build their own guidebook for their communities with their own language.

IPD in Indigenous Communities: Real Project Experience Panel

The project was delivered on time, within Target Cost, and achieved additional community benefit that includes an additional reservoir and repurposing old equipment for fire protection. The team used the Big Room to engage with the community and individuals responsible for operations/maintenance. This elevated community (ending water advisories) and capacity (integrating operations/maintenance to develop a very functional system that can be maintained by their strong team).

Dan is the Director of Collaborative Delivery and a recognized leader in the collaborative methods community in Canada. Daniel has over 38 years of experience in the construction industry, including 20 years in project management, working with suppliers, specialized contractors, general contractors, and as a representative for the client.

In recent years, he has had the opportunity to implement various continuous improvement systems, such as ISO 9000, as well as collaborative tools and cultures, in more than 50 organizations across Canada.

Since 2013, Daniel has been involved, at various levels, in over a dozen collaborative projects, particularly in Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). Thanks to his extensive experience, for the past four years, he has served as an expert consultant in collaborative practices. He is responsible for facilitating a suite of consulting services for clients focused on collaboration, and he leads the development of his clients’ multidisciplinary teams by providing guidance and project leadership through targeted workshops, training modules, tool selection, collaborative process development, and contract execution.

 In parallel, Daniel also serves as President of the Integrated Project Delivery Alliance (IPDA), a Canadian nonprofit association that focuses on raising awareness of collaborative methods.

Workshop #3: Vernon Active Living Center - Creating a Culture for Innovation and Improvement

The session will focus on how the Vernon ALC project team used an intentional strategy of continuous improvement and team structure to help foster collaborative innovation. Early activities targeted cross partner engagement and the development of informed solutions that were then collaboratively and purposely improved.
The workshop will examine:
• Contract development strategies – big wins, adaptations, and future improvements.
• Early design and construction integration – set based design and design pull planning.
• Getting to a Go – managing decisions, continuous estimating, other engaged parties and innovating the validation report process.
• Building – trust, accountability, alignment and resiliency.
See how tasks were structured and visualized to align the team; how collaborative progress was guided, managed and reviewed. Then use the lessons learned in focused groups each guided by a multidisciplinary team of facilitators (owners, architects, engineers, contractors, trades and advisors) to share experiences and brainstorm future process improvements. Results captured shared via Menti to create a workshop record of continuous improvement ideas. The team also plans to refine ideas and feedback to shape ongoing adaptations and improvements as the project advances through construction. Feedback will be sent to attendees who ask to be included in the distribution.

Larisa Tcherednitchenko leads the WSP Collaborative Partnering team and has over 12 years of experience in the consulting engineering field, including 4 years leading win strategy for major transportation and infrastructure bids combined with successful implementation of ISO 44001 Collaborative Business Relationships in Canada. Larisa has a breadth of experience in developing teams across multiple sectors including buildings, transportation, and infrastructure and in multiple contract models including Alliance, Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), Progressive Design Build (PDB), and Delivery Partner projects. Having worked on projects such as the Union Station Enhancement Project Alliance, the Calgary Green Line Progressive Design Build from early teaming stages through to Collaborative Behavioural assessment and continue to support the teams on the joint client development phase.

Elevating IPD Projects with Psychological Safety 

Employee turnover in the construction industry is high and as a result psychological safety is low. This contributes to project failures, overruns, schedule delays, low morale, loss of industry trust, staff shortages, etc.

We as an industry have to recognize that people are new to IPD, and, quite frequently, are new to their organization. This can lead to a conflicting set of values and priorities between the IPD team member and their organization. This will quickly erode psychological safety as they become paralyzed by these conflicts and may be unable to make commitments.

How can we help fix this? Early collaboration with IPD team members in getting a commitment to align onboarding, and set transparent expectations, and allowable commitments, which will help build psychological safety. Also by identifying team behaviours, and exploring team strengths enables team trust and engagement, and also allows staff to feel confident to utilize their experience.

With over 30 years of experience, Kimberly Johnston is the principal and lead architect of Vancouver-based architecture firm Johnston Davidson Architecture (JDa). As the firm was founded by her father, Kim has worked with JDa on various capacities since an early age where she worked side by side with her Dad to cultivate a fun and interesting architectural solution for Clients. In 2005, Kim became a registered architect and took the lead in designing many of the firm’s civic and institutional projects. Her extensive experience in municipal projects have provided her with valuable knowledge in navigating complex client groups and intricate design challenges. All of these attributes bring value to the project and when matched with her team approach to design, create a balance between achieving design excellence and providing clients with solutions that integrate affordability, innovation and LEED®/sustainable concepts.

Her extensive experience with firehall and protective services projects has given Kimberly valuable knowledge of dealing with complex client groups and intricate design challenges. Many of these projects have required intense coordination between client groups, consultants, city/municipal/district departments, along with the implementation of strong design ideas. Her creative approach to engaging the various groups and producing visual materials to create a design dialogue amongst all parties has been an integral part of the JDa package.

Kim’s experience with IPD has garnered her skills as part of the SMT, PMT and PIT procedures, especially under tight timelines and challenging sites. Kim’s most valuable asset to an IPD project is being a team player; having the right people in the right room makes an IPD project flow effectively, something Kim has experienced and enjoys. Kim will also act as the main design project lead, helping coordinate all design aspects.

Why the Waaban Crossing IPD Project was described as the "Gold Standard'' for Infrastructure Delivery

This presentation will demonstrate why the Waaban Crossing IPD Project (Kingston 3rd Crossing) was described as the "Gold Standard for Infrastructure Delivery" by Mark Garretsen, (MP for Kingston and the Islands) in the Houses of Parliment.

This will be a co-presentation between Kiewit’s Brian Norcliffe and City of Kingston’s Mark Van Buren (City of Kingston is a IDPA member). The Waaban Crossing Project (formerly known as the Kingston Third Crossing) was described as the “Gold Standard for Infrastructure Delivery” by the House of Parliament’s Mark Garretsen (MP for Kingston and the Islands). Named after the Ojibwe term meaning dawn or morning light, the project involved the construction of a new 1.2 km bridge over the Cataraqui River and Rideau Canal connecting the city of Kingston, ON. The Waaban Crossing was the first of its kind – the first IPD bridge construction project in North America. This on time and on budget project was officially opened December 13, 2022. The IPD framework empowered the multidisciplinary team to reimagine and refine the bridge’s design and construction methodologies during the validation period-resulting in cost-saving innovations and increased safety. In addition to encouraging active transportation, the new crossing with bike lanes and walking paths will significantly reduce journey time across the river by an estimated 40% (significantly reducing GHG emissions), expand existing transit routes, serve as a potential emergency detour for Highway 401 traffic, and improve access to city services. The city estimates that these benefits will reduce vehicular travel by 60 million kilometers per year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 14,000 tonnes per year. This presentation will fall as a 1 (beginner) on the scale of previous understanding of IPD or lean terminology and concepts.

Scott Groves is a Professional Engineer who has worked a diverse career with time spent as a consultant, project manager, and people manager working with municipalities, indigenous communities, and the private development industry.  Scott is currently the Director, Corporate Projects for the Township of Langley a municipality within Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, responsible for the planning, design, and construction of the municipality’s corporate facilities as well as the Parks Design & Development team.  Corporate Projects currently underway include recreation buildings, community centres, cultural centres/libraries, and fire halls, as well as sports fields, playgrounds, and water parks.

John is a senior member of the JDa team, who has been working at the firm for over 20 years. John’s path in architecture is unconventional. He was an art geek in high school but was cautioned by his parents to learn a reliable trade as “arts won’t pay the bills.” He transitioned to Drafting and AutoCAD classes where he soon mastered the program. This journey began in 2017 and concluded successfully in 2023. Despite facing challenges posed by the pandemic early in the project timeline, the new facility was completed on schedule and within budget in November 2023. Projects include, subdivisions, transportation, water distribution, storm and sanitary collection systems, drainage, and facility upgrades. The latest accomplishment has been the recent upgrading of the City’s Wastewater Treatment facility. Utilizing a relatively new project delivery methodology called Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), the project was successfully completed on time and on budget. Project was started pre-Covid and continued on through the supply-chain issues that are and continue to be present to this day.

Terry served as a member of the Project Management Team (PMT) for the City of Lloydminster MWWTF IPD project.
